Our Ethical Approach

Nestlé Purina scientists conduct research on animal feeding behaviour and nutritional needs. We only conduct tests that are used in routine veterinary home care and studies must support advancements in the quality of life of dogs and cats. We do not support or use any invasive procedures. We do not participate in any research that requires inducing disease or the euthanasia of dogs and cats. Our efforts are guided by a code of ethics that meets or exceeds standards of the relevant legislations.

Nestlé Purina evaluates pet food products on cats and dogs who are representative of a healthy and mentally stimulated pet population. Hence, our pet centres aim to provide a home-like environment and lifestyle by:

  • Enriching the environment with beds, toys, walk areas, decoration, and sounds
  • Providing a comfortable, clean and healthy environment
  • Giving all pets names, individual attention, and treating them with respect
  • Encouraging socialisation and daily interaction as part of everyday enrichment programmes – these include training, group play, and access to toys
  • Developing strong technician-pet bonds: sharing work areas and having a good ratio of pets per technician
  • Having an ultimate goal of making all our pets adoptable, preparing them to fit into a real home for their retirement

We take a global approach to pet welfare. Standards are developed and assessed worldwide by our veterinarians and behaviourists. The veterinarian in charge of a pet’s health at each facility is the sole decision maker as to whether or not a cat or dog is fit to test a product.
